Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga and Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin
The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, over what he says is his penchant for failing to keep his word.
During proceedings on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the Minority Leader accused Mahama Ayariga of deceiving the House by claiming that President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled his promises to the Ghanaian people.
In response, the Majority Leader cited instances where the Minority Leader has failed to keep his promises.
According to the Majority Leader, Afenyo-Markin promised to ensure the return of the embattled former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who has failed to honor a physical appearance at the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
“You promised to present Ken Ofori-Atta in May, but we are now in June… When you make promises, you don’t fulfill them,” he stated.
The Majority Leader further cited the recent protest led by the Minority Leader at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as another instance of his failure to keep his word.
“You promised to sleep at EOCO, but you left by 10 PM,” he quipped.
While leading his Caucus to protest the detention of Chairman Wontumi, the Minority Leader gave clear notice that they were willing to sleep at the headquarters until the release of the regional chairman.
“Until EOCO does the right thing, we on the NPP side will protest by absenting ourselves from Parliament and joining him. We are all going to sleep there with him,” Afenyo-Markin said on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, May 30.
However, despite spending some hours at EOCO in protest, members of the Minority Caucus had deserted the protest by night.
