Kwadwo Twum Boafo, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority and a leading member of the National Democratic Congress believes that Dr. Randy Abbey, the host of Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana, was the target of an invasion of the media house by a joint mob and police officials.
Speaking on the Thursday, November 28 edition of the program, Twum Boafo condemned what he observed to be a culture of impunity pervasive in the Ghana Police Service.
Condemning the actions of the mob and police, Twum Boafo appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to rein in his officers and curb the trend of police officers overstepping their legal boundaries.
Kwadwo Twum Boafo expressed abhorrence at the conduct of the officers and urged Dr. Randy Abbey to institute legal action against them.
"It was an attempt to show you where power lies, and this is the impunity I'm talking about. Why didn't they attack others? It was designed to intimidate Randy Abbey. The culture of impunity that has built up in this country is what gives rise to these things.
"If the IGP is watching today, he should know that it is not cool for some policemen to be used for things like this, and then you have to step in, order another set of men to come in and calm the situation. The culture of impunity should not exist at all," he said.
Background:
The Wednesday, November 27, 2024, edition of Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana had to be suspended following a scuffle within the building of the media house by a group of armed men accompanied by police officers as they attempted to enter the studio.
According to Dr. Randy Abbey, private security personnel working at the station had been attacked by the invaders, leading to one of the security personnel being injured.
In the video cited by GhanaWeb, Dr. Randy Abbey was seen questioning the authority of the police and the alleged armed men attempting to enter the studio.
"Which court gave you that authority?" a furious Dr. Randy Abbey was seen questioning a uniformed police officer.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement issued on the same day, said they are investigating the issue.
