Young At Heart Ghana, a youth-driven organization that focuses on bridging the gap of computer literacy among children in rural and deprived areas in Ghana, has established two Information Communication Technology (ICT) hubs at Aboabogya in the Atwima Mponus District, and Adweso in the New Juaben Municipality.

The ICT hub was established in conjunction with Patriots Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Chapter, to give children in those communities takes to computer education as part of their volunteerism.

The Hub is furbished with computers to encourage the children who have been empowered with basic computer skills, to utilize the computers to study core subjects like English, Mathematics and Science, as well as televised teaching lessons.

The Young At Heart Ghana, is a voluntary organization made up of students from KNUST, University of Ghana, All Nations University, Kumasi and Koforidua Polytechnics, who use their own resources during vacation, to teach ICT in deprived communities.

So far the team has reached out to over 1,000 children in basic schools in deprived areas in the Atwima Mponua district in the Ashanti region, Ga west district in Greater-Accra, and New Juaben, in the Eastern Region, and has also taught Mathematics with a simple approach to demystify the learning of the subject.

According to Ms Josephine Marie Godwyl, a leader of the organization, the team adopts a dynamic and different approach towards championing computer literacy in rural and deprived communities, in order to tackle the problems of lack of teaching personnel, and logistics, which are impediments in ICT education.

She believed that computer literacy should be championed at the formative stages of children, because it promotes familiarity of the use of computers as a tool in this modern day and age, where Information Technology is adapted in improving the quality of life in general.

Ms Godwyl, on behalf of the team, appealed to interesting persons and organizations who have the education of children at heart, especially ICT, to support this good cause for the benefit of the entire Ghanaian society.
