Miss Regina Agyare, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Social Enterprise, Soronko Solutions, has urged young women to have high interest in building a career in the technology industry.
She said, “Diversity improves problem solving, productivity and innovation; hence the need for female perspectives in technology related jobs”.
Mrs Agyare said this on Friday March 27, 2015 at the MESTtalk hosted by the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) on the theme, “Women in technology”.
The founder advised young ladies not to only limit themselves to the study of Arts, Administrative work, among others; but to have a combination of skill sense to fit into the growing industry, technology.
“Women are blessed with problem solving talents and technology, which is made of the math and science. It is time women stop saying, because am a woman, I can’t study technology,” she challenged.
She tasked young women to overcome major challenges the society has created for women- stereotyping and sexism- especially in technology-related jobs.
“The society has always referred women to opt for the Arts, Nursing and Administration work while the computer science’s are referred to the men, because men are considered more genius to pursue such programmes,” she said.
This has led to a very high gab in tertiary institutions and the technology industry, making it a male-dominated field of work.
Mrs Regina Agyare stressed that, “It is time women start competing with men in a male-dominated industry by standing out successfully in such fields”.
Other speakers present were Miss Linda Ansong, Vestracker Co-founder and Ms Ethel Cofie, Founder of Women in Tech Ghana.
