Your grief is our grief – Minority mourns with government on death of senior officials in helicopter crash

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed profound condolences on behalf of the Minority Caucus to the government, the families of the deceased, and the nation following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of senior government officials on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. '

In a signed statement, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Afenyo-Markin, conveyed the Minority’s deep sorrow, stating, “Your grief is our grief. We stand in solidarity with the government and the families of our departed colleagues during this moment of profound loss.”

He described the incident as a national tragedy that has left the country in mourning while stressing the need for unity across political divides in the face of such a devastating loss.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that a Z9 helicopter, which departed Accra at 0912hrs on Wednesday en route to Obuasi for the launch of a cooperative mining initiative, lost contact with radar shortly after takeoff.

The statement from the Armed Forces noted, “All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were three crew members and five passengers. Further details will be communicated soon.” The crash was later confirmed to have occurred at Adansi Akrofuom, with no survivors.

Among the victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; Limuna Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; and Samuel Aboagye, NADMO Deputy Director-General. The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the deaths during a briefing at the Jubilee House.

Afenyo-Markin extended heartfelt sympathies, particularly to the families of the deceased, noting the significant contributions of the officials to Ghana’s development.

“These were individuals who dedicated their lives to public service. Their loss is a blow not only to their families but to the entire nation,” he said.

The Minority Leader also called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent future tragedies, urging the authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in the process.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, earlier disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama was emotionally distraught over the incident. A government delegation, led by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and supported by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and the Army Commander, has been constituted to formally inform the families of the deceased.

The Minority Caucus, in the statement, reiterated its commitment to supporting the government and the people of Ghana during this period of grief.

“We pray for strength for the families and for the nation to bear this irreparable loss. May the souls of our departed colleagues rest in peace,” Afenyo-Markin concluded.
