Mon, 20 Oct 1997 Source: --

Berekum (Brong Ahafo Region), 15 Oct. A group of unidentified youth from Mpatase, near Berekum, yesterday attacked and ransacked the Berekum district police station, injuring a number of policemen. The attack followed the arrest of some youths for demolishing a house they claimed was being built on a piece of land earmarked for a clinic. A police source told the GNA at Berekum today that last week a private developer, whose name was not given, complained of harassment by the youth of Mpatase, who were accusing him of encroachment. It said even though the site plan clearly indicates that his plot was adjacent to that earmarked for the clinic, the youth still disputed this and warned him to stop work or face the consequence. The police source said the developer disregarded the warning and started work on his house, only for it to be pulled down. It said the police arrested some youths for questioning but were besieged by a mob, which demanded the immediate release of the suspects. When the police refused to give in to their request, they attacked the them, tearing their uniforms into shreds and inflicting injuries on them. No arrests have been made yet, but the regional police command has sent reinforcement from Sunyani to Berekum. The injured have since been admitted at Berekum Holy Family hospital.
