Youth Urged to protect water bodies

The Waterand Sanitation Systems Coordinator of the Community water and sanitationAgency, Ms Charlotte A Engmann has called on the youth to protect the country?swater bodies so as to help reduce future water crisis.

Ms Engmanwas speaking at this year?s Youth day, organised by the Ghana Girl GuidesAssociation under the theme ?Water is Life, Let?s save our water bodies? heldat Kyebi in the Eastern Region.

In herspeech, she recounted the importance of water to the development of people andadvised the youth to avoid cutting down trees around these water bodies butrather plant more and also stop using areas around water bodies as refuse dumpsand defecation points. Other Speakers were from the Water Resources Commission.

On herpart, the Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Girl Guides Association, Mrs PatienceAniagyei mentioned that the Association decided to chose Kyebi for this year?scelebration because of the Birim River which is their mainsource of water and also for the fact that this river has for sometime beenfacing some environmental challenges amongst others.

She laterdonated water filtering and preservation materials to some schools at Kyebiafter a demonstration on how they are used. She advised the students to takevery good care of these items.

Other majoractivities which marked the celebration included, a float through some streetsof the Kyebi Community and a tree planting exercise at the Birim River.
