Mon, 7 Dec 1998 Source: --

Winneba (Central Region, 7 Dec. '98 - Alhaji Huudu Yahaya, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged youth associations not to meddle in chieftaincy disputes. He advised them to re-direct their energies to the development of their communities. Alhaji Yahaya was speaking at the commissioning of new offices for the Winneba Youth Association at the weekend. The ceremony coincided with the fourth biennial delegates congress of the youth and women's wings of the NDC, which took place at the National Sports College at Winneba. He said laudable development programmes cannot be carried out if they involved their associations in chieftaincy affairs and unnecessary issues. Mr Yahaya later registered as a member of the association and promised all he could to ensure that they operate effectively. Mr Mike Hammah, Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, and MP for Efutu, commissioned the project which cost five million cedis. The Deputy Minister announced that government has given approval for the construction of a new 17 million-dollar water supply system for the people of the Efutu traditional area. He said final agreement on the project will be signed before the end of this year to ensure early commencement of work. Mr Hammah said there is also a 40,000-dollar grant for the provision of water closet public places of convenience along the beach in Winneba. He called for the institutionalisation of clean-up exercises to keep various towns and surrounding villages tidy to protect them from epidemics. The Deputy Minister commended leaders of the Winneba youth associations for their initiative which he said would help in mobilising the unemployed youth in the Awutu-Efutu-Senya district for development. Mr John Baiden, chairman of the association pledged that the association will shun chieftaincy litigation and mobilise all energetic youth in the district to assist the government to implement its policies and programmes.
