Youth advocates against political propaganda

Youth advocates in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, have called on politicians and opinion leaders to reduce the excessive political propaganda on the various media platforms and focus on issues relating to the wellbeing of the youth.

According to them, the youth are the future leaders in all spheres of life and issues about them must be of prime importance to the nation.

The Youth advocates made the call at the “Youth Health Advocacy Assembly Session” held at Elmina during which they staged a mock assembly session to discuss HIV and AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, teenage pregnancy, truancy, indiscipline, sanitation among other challenges confronting the youth.

The Central Region Office of the National Youth Authority organised the programme with support from the United Nation Fund for Population Agency, with participants drawn from the various basic school in the KEEA Municipality, and from Cape Coast.

The Elmina Director of Social Welfare Department, Mrs Cecilia Arthur, noted that parenting had become a bigger task since the era during which it was the responsibility of every grown up person to ensure the sound upbringing of children is past.

Mrs Arthur advised parents against covering up defilement cases but instead report offenders to the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit of Ghana Police Service for the necessary action to be taken.

The Founder of Human Life Foundation, an NGO, Mrs Theresa Mensah who chaired the function, advocated sex education especially at home to enlighten children and help prevent teenage pregnancy which is often due to ignorance about reproductive health.

The Head of the Social Sciences Department of the Our Lady of Apostles College of Education, Mrs. Aba Entsiwah advised children who suffer excessive abuse from their parents to report to the Social Welfare Department for assistance.

Nana Faidu Abrodu, a representative of the Elmina Traditional Council blamed some parents for the upsurge of indiscipline since they do not spend quality time with them.
