Youth is the pillar in nation building

Kumasi, Dec. 10, GNA- The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has said the youth is the pillar in nation building.

Mr P.H. Mensah, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE, who said this, recognized that civic education should therefore not be limited to adults only but for the youth in their formative years. He said the commission has introduced and encouraged the formation of civic education clubs in schools and colleges, adding that, it was to promote civic awareness among the youth.

Mr Mensah was speaking at the inauguration of civic education clubs for six Senior Secondary Schools at Mampong in the Sekyere West District of Ashanti.

The schools were Saint Monica's Secondary School, Saint Joseph's Seminary Secondary Commercial School, Odiko Boatema Vocational Institute, Kofiase SDA Secondary-Technical School, Amaniampong Secondary School and Nsutaman Catholic Secondary school.

"As a matter of fact the nation's future rests on the character of the youth, for they determine whether what has been accomplished through our sweat and toil can be sustained and built upon", he said. Mr Mensah emphasized that civic education clubs in schools do not belong to the NCCE and that they were expected to function the same way as any other club or society in the school.

Madam Beatrice Bio, Director of Girl Child Education at the District Education Office noted that the formation of the civic clubs in schools was timely.

She asked the executive of the clubs to be selfless, respectful and show transparency in all their activities. Mrs Mercy Ampem Darko, the Mampong District Magistrate who chaired the function, praised the introduction of the civic education club concept and said it would discipline in the youth.
