The Ministry of Inner-City and Zongo Development in collaboration with Qatar Charity, a Non-Governmental Organization has provided over two hundred needy families in three Zongo communities of the Greater Accra Region with support to enable them to celebrate this year’s Eid Ul Adha festivities after Ramadan.

More than 200 needy families in the three Zongo communities namely Madina, Otinibi-Danfa in the La-Nkwantang Municipal, Nima in the Ayawaso East municipality and Sukura in Ablekuma central had five kilos of meat each for the celebration of the Eid.

Speaking in an interview after supervising the distribution of the meats to the beneficiary family Alhaji Ismail Swalah, an Engineer with the NGO said the distribution of the meat to the needy families was to enable them to enjoy the Eid festivities, an annual ritual for practising Muslims.

According to him, the NGO is working hard to deliver more meats to be distributed every year in collaboration with the Ministry as it is planning to increase the number of cows from the current ten cows to fifty cows to support more families in the Zongo communities He further said.

He said, aside from the distribution of the meats the NGO is working with the Ministry to ensure the improvement of lives in the deprived Zongo communities so as to eradicate poverty among the less –privilege in the Zongo communities across the country.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Director of Programmes and Projects at the Ministry Princess Amina Sammo said the gesture was to support families that could not celebrate the Eid.

She noted that the meat is the widow’s mite of both the Ministry and Qatar Charity to bring smiles to the faces of the needy families in the Zongo communities.

Dr. Joseph Darmoe, Director of Research, Statistic and Information Management (RSIM) on his part assured beneficiaries that there are more in the pipeline as part of the collaboration with the NGO.

He said the NGO has pledged to drill thirty-six boreholes in some selected Zongo communities across the country this year.

He stressed that in the next few weeks to come the Ministry will break grounds for the construction of some boreholes in the beneficiary communities across the country.

According to him, aside all these the NGO is also supporting the Ministry with some numbers of sewing machines, vulcanizing equipment and small tools for bicycle repairs, which were distributed to beneficiaries as soon as they arrive in Ghana

He explained that the Ministry has partnered with the NGO to provide tangible skills to the needy people in the Zongo communities because poverty breeds insecurity.

"Insecurity in the Zongo communities has over the years stalled development in these areas across the country" he maintained.
