A predominantly Muslim youth group calling itself Zongo for Manly-Spain is rooting for Mr. Henry Ekow Manly-Spain (pictured) to become the next Greater Accra Regional chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The tough speaking Manly-Spain has recently made clear his intentions to contest the incumbent regional chair, Mr. Joseph Ade Cooker, a long time football administrator.

And the Zongo youth group believes that manly-Spain has the credentials as a long time committed party loyalist to consolidate the political gains made by the NDC in the Greater Accra Region in the past elections.

The spokesperson of the group, Mr. Abdallah Musah, speaking in an interview said “the Greater Accra has to remain a bastion of our party if we are to convincingly win the next general elections in 2016”.

“In our estimation the best person to make sure we maintain our support base and further add voters to our fold is Mr. Manly-Spain and we are actively in support of his candidature” he adds.

Mr. Manly-Spain’s call for unity within the ranks of the ruling party is one attribute that has clearly earned him admiration in the NDC and the group is convinced that he can close the party’s ranks and prepare them for victory in 2016.

Mr. Musah holds the view that the young generation should be given the opportunity to occupy responsible positions as done by the late President John Atta Mills and now President John Mahama, who have appointed young ministers who are equally discharging their duties creditably.

“Young and dynamic individuals such as Manly-Spain are needed by our party and country to fill position and serve their people. The new thinking dictates that the young should gradually be given the opportunity to contribute to national development” he said.

Mr. Manly-Spain, a businessman based in Ghana and Europe has for several years been an outspoken member of the National Democratic Congress. Much of his calls and appeals have been for unity and peace in the party and the country at large.

He recently donated assorted foodstuffs, including frozen chicken to some Muslim youth groups as the Islamic community observes the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The ruling party has recently set out a timetable for ward, constituency and regional elections, which would be climaxed with a national congress in October this year.
