Waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana limited is to introduce new technologies that are environmentally friendly and affordable for waste management in Ghana. According to the company, this will immensely help the country deal with the sanitation challenge it currently faces.
Speaking at a handing over ceremony of new trucks for MMDAs in the Ashanti region, General Manager for the company’s wing in the region, Mr. Kofi Sekyere Boateng, said the company is keen on employing the very latest technology in dealing with the sanitation challenges in the country.
He indicated that the company has brought 500 skip trucks to augment their fleet in the system.
In addition, 150 new compaction trucks for household waste collection have been deployed.
He said Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. is constructing a compost plant at Adegya near Kumasi to turn waste into manure for use by farmers – a move he believes will help create more than 600 direct and indirect jobs.
He advised that waste management should be considered as an economic good rather than a public good.
To this, residents will have to pay realistic charges for quality service delivery by waste management companies in the region.
On her part, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mrs. Elizabeth Agyemang, admonished the MMDCEs to use the trucks for its intended purpose and ensure that the vision of the president to see all cities clean is achieved.
A representative of the MMDCEs who received the items on behalf of the other districts thanked the company for the gesture saying it was a move that was going to help in the President’s vision of a clean Ghana.
He added that the MMDCEs will ensure that the trucks are utilized for its purposes for improved health and safety.
Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. a couple of weeks ago donated 500 refuse trucks for use by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country.
The trucks form part of the company’s vision of equipping MMDAs and boosting their role in tackling sanitation issues.
"The current fleet is made of 500 new skip trucks with the requisite number of containers for efficient and effective operations in the country,” chairman of the JOSPONG Group, Joseph Siaw Agyapong said at a handing over ceremony held at the Independence Square.
The ceremony was attended by Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey, Local Government Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama and her deputy, O.B Amoah.
The company in 2016 distributed 400 waste trucks and 5,000 motorized tricycles to the MMDAs.
Zoomlion Ghana however plans to distribute some one million litter bins nationwide to households for waste collection services.
