Atonsu (Ash), April 24, GNA--An 89 million-cedi school block built at Atonsu in the Sekyere West district of Ashanti to replace an old structure which collapsed and claimed the life of a pupil last year, has been commissioned.
The construction of the six classroomed block with an office and store, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the community, the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA)Church and the MP for Nsuta-Kwamang, Mr Kwame Osei-Prempeh.
The community contributed 48 million cedis with the SDA church providing 30 million cedis while the MP made available 11 million cedis from his share of the common fund.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Osei-Prempeh said the school block is a symbol of what could be achieved through joint pooling of resources and effective partnership.
He advised parents in the area to ensure that their children of school-going age are enrolled in the school, noting that the money put into the project could become a total waste if the classrooms are empty.
Mr Samuel Akwasi Achampong, Sekyere West District Chief Executive, expressed appreciation to the SDA church for its role in the promotion of education in the district.
He announced that the district assembly has approved 200 million cedis to improve drainage in the town. Pastor Abraham Peter Mensah, President of the Central Ghana Conference of the SDA, drew attention to the need to strengthen supervision in schools to ensure discipline and a rise in academic standards.
Earlier in a welcoming address, Mr R.A. Owusu, chairman of the Atonsu 'Nkosuo Kuo', a benevolent society, asked the people to pay their development levies of 10,000 cedis towards the facelift of the town. An appeal for funds yielded about 10 million cedis.
