Koforidua, June 19, GNA - The management of Newmont Ghana has reserved 50 per cent of unskilled jobs for people within its operational areas in the country.
Mr Appiah Kusi, an official of the company disclosed this at the second quarterly briefing with media personnel in the Eastern Region at Koforidua at the weekend.
He said the company had established a micro-economic project under which farmers in areas affected by their mining operations would be assisted to acquire the same acreage for farming and others to undertake other income generating activities to improve on their standard of living.
Mr Kusi said under the project, the company had acquired about 1,000 hectares about 20 kilometres from their mining area for distribution to affected farmers to undertake farming. He explained that those who would accept the offer would be given financial support to acquire seedlings, agricultural extension services and other technical support.
Mr Kusi said other affected farmers who would acquire lands outside those acquired by the company would be assisted to acquire them and provided assistance to re-establish their farms.
He said in addition, the company would assist in the capacity building of District Assemblies within their operational areas towards socio-economic development.
