Ghana Gets New Ambassador to USA

Takes appointment First week of July, 2006

His Excellency Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei, currently Ghana?s Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation and the Federal Republic of Austria as well as Permanent Representative to the United Nations Offices in Europe, with offices in Geneva and Vienna, will take up his appointment in Washington in the first week of July 2006.

Ambassador Bawuah-Edusei?s vast experience in public and private life has prepared him for his new job, particularly the enhancement of the existing friendly and cordial relations between Ghana and the United States of America as well as the pursuit of Ghana?s economic diplomacy in the U.S.


He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology in 1979 and a degree in Medicine in 1983 from the School of Medical Science of the University of Science and Technology. He worked as a Medical Doctor at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for two years and later coordinated clinical trials with the American National Clinical Research Centre (NCRC) from 1985-1993, where he rose to the rank of Manager. From 1993 to 1996, he pursued his Medical Residency in Family Medicine at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.


H. E. Dr. Bawuah-Edusei served as a Private Physician Partner at the Greenbelt Medical Centre, Maryland until 1999. Prior to establishing his own medical practice at the Educe Medical Centre, he practiced as an independent Physician Contractor with the Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belver, Virginia, in the United States of America until 2003.


In Ghana, he was a Director of the Educe Incorporated, a Ghanaian agro-based and medical company, as well as a Partner of the E. O. Group Ltd which has interests in oil exploration and energy development.

In the course of his Medical Residency training from 1993 up to his first appointment, H. E. Dr. Bawuah-Edusei became a Ghanaian Community leader in North America, lobbying the United States Congress, State Department and the World Bank for their support towards the development of a vibrant and sustainable democracy in Ghana. He was personally involved in humanitarian work in Ghana through regular free medical care to deprived communities, especially in the northern part of the country.


H. E. Dr. Bawuah-Edusei is well-positioned to effectively mobilize the Ghanaian Community in the United States to play a vibrant role in the national development efforts, a function he ably executed as a private citizen and since assuming post as Ghana?s Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation in August 2004. While in Switzerland H.E. Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei organized a Swiss Trade Mission to Accra in March 2005; Investment and Business Promotion Forum in Zurich, Switzerland, in September of the same year, a delegation of businessmen and women accompanying the Ministers of Finance & Economic Planning and Trade & Industry; obtained agreement to host the 2008 UNCTAD XII Conference in Accra.


H. E. the Ambassador has been active in UN Conferences, being instrumental in securing for his country Excom membership of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; leading delegations to the UNIDO in 2004, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Summits, IAEA Board Meetings, WHO World Health Assembly and finally the World Trade Organisation round of negotiations in Hong Kong.
