PROFILE OF HIS EXCELLENCY
MR. ANNAN ARKYIN CATO, HIGH COMMISSIONER TO THE
UNITED KINGDOM
His Excellency Mr. Annan Arkyin Cato, High Commissioner to the United Kingdom was born on 6th May,1939. He attended Achimota Secondary school from 1953 to 1959 and continued at the University of Ghana, Legon where he obtained a B.A (Hons) degree in History in 1963. He continued his studies at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and obtained a Diploma in Public Administration and International Affairs in 1964.
Mr. Cato joined the Ghana Foreign Service in 1964 and served as a diplomat for 35 years. During that period, he served in different capacities in Ghana’s Diplomatic missions abroad, in Addis Ababa, Rome, New York (United Nations), Geneva and London. In London, he served as Deputy High Commissioner and between 1985 and 1987 as Acting High Commissioner. Between 1976 and 1986, Mr. Cato was Chairman of the United Nations Ad Hoc Working Group of Experts on Southern Africa. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he served at the Africa Division and as Chief of Protocol, the latter between 1978 and 1981.
Between 1987 and 1992 Mr. Cato was seconded to the Office of the President as Director of State Protocol. In 1992 he was appointed High Commissioner to Canada.
On the completion of his assignment in Canada in 1997 Mr. Cato was appointed Chief Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he occupied up to his retirement in 2001.
In 2001, Mr. Cato was appointed Secretary to the Cabinet and retired from the Public Service in 2005. He took up his duties as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, on 27th June, 2006.
Mr. Cato has been a widower since February, 2005. He has three children and two grand children.
He is holder of the State Award of Companion of the Order of the Volta.
