Akan names missing in register

Voters with Akan names who transferred their votes to the Offinso North constituency during the recent revisions of the voters' register could not trace their names when it was exhibited recently, the Statesman reported.

Although officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) attributes the situation to genuine error, the paper says it has learnt it is one of several NDC ploys to unseat the NPP's Member of Parliament, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku who in 1996 won by a narrow margin over NDC's Nana Oduro.

The Statesman's story carries that the NDC is disturbed by the incisive contributions of Dr Apraku in Parliament as well as his comments on national issues, particularly that of the economy, and has vowed to take his seat from him. The First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings reportedly launched a blistering attack on the MP at his constituency during her tour to the area asking the electorates to reject him for the forthcoming elections.

Dr Apraku, according to Statesman, is however poised for another electoral victory, having won the people's admiration through his sterling parliamentary performance.
