The Valco Trust Fund, last Thursday presented 20 life jackets worth ?28 million to the electoral commission. The presentation, which took place on the premises of the commission, was made by Dr. Joyce Asibe, a Managing Trustee of the fund, who represented the board of trustees.
Presenting the items she said that the board of trustees about four months ago received a request for the life jackets from the Chairman of the Electoral Commission.
She noted with concern the number of accidents on the Volta, which could have resulted in fewer deaths if the right safety gear were available.
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission Dr. Kojo Afari Gyan who received the jackets on behalf of the commission and the people of Ghana thanked the Valco Trust fund for the donation.
According to Dr. Afari Gyan, contrary to popular belief it is not only in the Volta Region that electoral officers gain access to certain areas by boat. Instead he said, in each of the ten regions, certain areas are accessible only by boat. The Electoral Commission expressed the hope that the Trust's gesture, would serve as an example to other institutions in the country.
