Accra, Sept. 30, GNA - The Justice Georgina Wood Committee has exonerated Kwadwo Ababio, aka Kwadwo Nsamankwaa one of the four persons arrested soon after testifying before the Georgina Wood Committee during its public hearing in August 2006.
Mr Kan Dapaah, Minister of the Interior, disclosed this at a press Conference in Accra on Friday when he presented Government's position on the Justice Georgina Wood Report.
He said the Committee found that Kwadwo Ababio was not at the meeting that Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kofi Boakye held with four others in his house over the disappearance of cocaine from the MV Benjamin Vessel which docked at Tema on April 27, 2006.
He said the Committee was convinced 93that Kwadwo Ababio was not at the said meeting and had nothing to do with the illegal importation of the cocaine=94.
Four persons, who testified before the Georgina Woode Committee, which investigated the disappearance of narcotic drugs from the ship, were arrested at the end of the day's proceedings by Police Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on August 2, 2006.
The four were part of the team that had allegedly met in ACP Boakye's house in May 2006 to discuss the loss of 77 parcels of cocaine from the MV Benjamin Vessel at Tema Port when the ship docked there on April 27, 2006.
The four, who were marched into a waiting Police vehicle as they came out of the room where the hearing took place were; Kwabena Amaning alias Tagor; Alhaji Issah Abass; Kwabena Acheampong and Kwadzo Ababio. A little drama took place that day, when Ababio, who was eventually being exonerated, went out to drink water and was heckled by some Police Officers, who attempted to arrest him.
Mr Ababio's Counsel, Mr Alfred Agyei-Mensah intervened and reported the incident to the Committee but Justice Wood said there was little she could do to stop the arrest of the witness once he had finished testifying before it.
Justice Wood said the operation of the Police was different from that of the Committee and she could, therefore, not interfere with the work of the Police.
This was during the playing of the controversial tape recording of proceeding at the meeting between ACP Boakye and the four persons in ACP Boakye's house at the public hearing of the Georgina Wood Committee. Mr Kan-Dapaah said the Attorney - General had therefore directed that charges levelled against Kwadwo Ababio be dropped and prosecution discontinued.
He said the Prosecution would, however, continue with regard to the four in addition to ACP Kofi Boakye, whom the Committee found culpable.
