Kumasi, Oct. 11, GNA - Members of the Asante Youth Association (AYA) and the Asante United Front (AUF), both pressure groups in Kumasi, have appealed to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, to stay focussed and not to be detracted by the empty noises by individuals and groups, who were intoxicated with pride and ignorance.

The two Groups said "we believe that you have a lot to accomplish for poverty stricken people not only in Ashanti but for people from all walks of life in the country".

They made the appeal at a press conference in Kumasi on Wednesday to register their protest against what they described as an orchestrated and wilful assault on Asantehene and Asante's cherished and sacred institutions through the media, recently.

Mr Charles Nuako, Spokesperson for the two groups, said the interest of the two Groups was to set the records straight and halt these attempts to attack the relative peace Ghanaians were enjoying in the country.

They noted; "there is a group in Ghana, who have constituted themselves as the custodians of all intelligence and morality and have taken advantage of the existing press freedom and clandestinely whipping up hatred towards decent members in society".

"As a group, we believe in the sanctity of individual freedoms but when such freedoms turn out to be negative, then, we have to call them to a halt.

"No nation can develop without the use of information technology but careless dissipation of the resources has a very harmful effect on society and it is, therefore, advisable and prudent for us to use this technology with circumspection=94, they pointed out.

The Groups stressed that, if the institutions set up to check these excesses in the society were unable to act accordingly then society should sit up and challenge the situation.

They said: 'Things of this nature prepare the grounds for possible civil unrest, which nobody wins at the end of the day and, therefore, called on the Government to do something about it.'

The Groups also urged the Government and the decent people in the country to sit up and bring such social commentators to check, especially the newspapers, television and radio stations that provided the platform for such nation wreckers.

Present at the conference were Mr Anthony Atta-Poku, President of AYA, Mr Kwame Afreh, Chairman of AUF and Nana Akwasi Agyeman, Former KMA Chief Executive and member of Manhyia Royalty.
