Birim South District basic school teachers join strike action

Akyem Oda, Oct. 13, GNA - Basic school teachers in Birim South District have joined the strike action by some of their colleagues in other parts of the country to back their demands for better salaries and working conditions.

A visit to most of the schools by the Ghana News Agency revealed that apart from some of the head teachers who were still at post, both teachers and pupils had deserted the campuses. Mr Humphrey Danso, Birim South District Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) refused to comment on the issue when contacted by the GNA.

Meanwhile the action has affected food vendors in the schools. Miss Adwoa Asiedu, who sells kenkey and fish at Akyem Oda Methodist Schools Complex, said she derived her income from selling at the school, but since the strike action, it had been difficult to feed her family of four.
She prayed for an early settlement of the impasse to enable her and other colleagues continued with their trading activities.

Berekum GNAT branch joins strike action

Berekum (B/A) Oct. 13, GNA - The Berekum Branch of Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, has embarked on an industrial action to press home their demand for better remuneration and better condition of service.

The Regional Executive member of GNAT, Mr. Lovace Sennyarger Moses, has pleaded with teachers to return to the classroom, while negotiations continued on proposal submitted.


The GNAT found out that, all academic activities came to a standstill in public schools at Berekum since virtually all the teachers, pupils and students were absent or idle. In a related development, teachers of Jaman South District on Wednesday also joined the industrial action in solidarity with their colleague graduate teachers.

In an interview with the Jaman South District GNAT Chairman, Mr. Moses conceded that teachers were on strike but GNAT as a body, has not taken any decision to back the action.


The District Director of Education, Mrs. Lilian Azuba Ayukor has asked some officials, including the GNAT leadership to investigate case.
