Accra, Nov. 26, GNA - Mr. Boye Laryea, Greater-Accra Regional Financial Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Saturday accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind the recent adulterated fuel scandal.
Speaking at the post regional congress rally of the party he alleged that the fuel stations found to be selling adulterated fuel to motorist were owned by NDC members.
"It is an orchestrated attempt to sabotage the NPP government for reducing the price of petrol when the world prices reduced." Mr. Laryea recalled that under the NDC government, fuel prices went up year after year and never went down, even when world prices plummeted. "This is the first time in the history of Ghana when the government reduced fuel prices to reflect world prices but fuel stations owned by NDC activists have decided to sabotage the government and in the process make more money to sponsor the parties nefarious acts," he said, drawing cheers from the party faithful. Mr Laryea also alleged that under the NDC, cocaine trafficking was rampant and overlooked by state actors, but under the NPP that act has been revealed and steps were being taken to prosecute culprits. "Let nobody be deceived that the NPP is a Narcotics Peddlers Party as our detractors may want you to believe because we are rather disclosing those evil acts and punishing the culprits, something the NDC failed to do even though they were aware," he said. He said, "We serve notice to Rawlings that his days are over because the NPP stands for the truth and transparency and indeed zero tolerance for corruption and human rights abuse." Sheik I. C. Quaye, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, said 20 years of human rights abuses under Rawlings' PNDC-NDC rule was a long rope given the Rawlings by God to hang himself, adding "now that he has hanged himself, there is no coming back for him." He said the current fragmentation of the NDC into DFP and NDC was a sign of divine judgement on the party. Sheik Quaye called on the party faithful to unite and put their weight behind the NPP campaign for victory in the 2008 general elections. Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey, a former Speaker of Parliament and a former Chairman of the NPP, said having struggled for years in opposition before gaining the mandate of the electorate to rule, the NPP stood to be judged by the populace on the accountability of its stewardship in the 2008 general elections. He urged the youth and regional executives to educate the masses at the grassroots level about all the good things the party had achieved for the country in the past six years in order to ensure victory, especially in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Volta regions where there party's prospects are weakest. Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, the Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, reminded the crowd that six year ago when NDC was in power Ghanaians lived in the culture of fear, where even Flt-Lt Rawlings, then President, could instigate brutality on taxi drivers and common citizens. "Today there are no people in condemned cells, no shaving of people's hair with naked razor blades and broken bottles and no political prisoners in Ghana. God has saved the country under the NPP government and we as party members must educate our constituents about all that," he said. Mr. Sam Crabbe, the Regional Chairman of the Party, told the crowd that fee free education, free transportation for kids on "Kufuor Buses", the free lunch program for basic school, the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), the construction of three new stadia, the National Health Insurance Scheme and the completion of the Tetteh Quarshie interchange were all signs of progress and movement in the right direction under the NPP. He urged party members to start the campaign for the 2008 general elections in earnest, saying that the NDC had started campaigning as they prepare for their presidential congress soon. Mr. Opare Addo, NPP-MP, Adenta, told the crowd that for the first time in the history of Ghana, the coming year's budget had been read ahead of time to enable the business and corporate community to plan ahead of time, saying that the NDC called he budget "awam budget" because they obviously did not any tangible thing to say about it. ...
