Accra, Feb. 5, GNA - The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Coman Engineering and Contracting, a Dutch company, have signed a contract to commence work on the Wa Water Supply Project. A press release singed by Mr Michael Agyeman, Chief Manager, Public Relation, said the works contract executed on January 31, 2007 was initialled by Mr Cobbie Kessie Jnr., Managing Director of Ghana Water Company on behalf of Ghana and Mr Danny Mainoo, Coman Representative in Ghana, signed for his Company.
The statement said the Government had finalized arrangements for a 39 million-Euro mixed credit facility from the Netherlands to undertake the Wa Water Supply Expansion Project.
The Project involves the construction of an intake on the Black Volta; construction of a 15,000 cubic metre per day water treatment plant; provision of transmission mains and distribution network improvement including storage.
The Project, which is meant to meet water demand in Wa and its environs up to 2025, would commence by the middle of 2007. Work is expected to be completed within 18 months. Mr Kesse Jnr. expressed satisfaction that the long awaited Project was about to be undertaken to solve the problem of water shortage in the Wa Municipality.
Mr Mainoo pledged his Company's commitment to completing the Project on schedule.
The source of water supply for the Wa Municipality is at present from a mechanized borehole.
The use of the Black Volta for water supply was chosen as a better option to meet the present and future water demand of the Municipality.
