AVSEC foils drug smuggling attempt at KIA

Accra, March 16, GNA - The Aviation Security (AVSEC) at the Kotoka International Airport(KIA) have foiled an attempt to smuggle substance suspected to be narcotic drugs(cocaine)out of the country.

Briefing journalists, a security source at the Airport said the AVSEC received intelligence reports That there was some suspicious substance within the premises of the airport.


According to the sources, all sections of the airport were then cordoned off and a search carried out, leading to the discovery of six boxes near the Duty Free Shop within the airport.


It said they were well parcelled, with each containing some quantity of the suspicious substance.

The source said officers from the Narcotics Control Board identified the substance to be narcotic drugs(cocaine) and took in an AVSEC personnel together with three workers at the Duty Free Shop for questioning.


It said two AVSEC personnel who were connected to the case had however failed to report for duty since the incident. The source said the case was being investigated.
