Nsawam (E/R), May 14, GNA - The Ghana Red Cross Society has organised a free medical outreach programme for over 80 inmates at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison as part of activities to mark the World Red Cross Day.

The inmates were also briefed on first aid tips, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Dr Abbas Moshforoush, Director for the Red Crescent Society of Iran Clinic in Accra, told newsmen that fungi infections, tuberculosis, diarrhoea, constipation and piles were the common ailments among the inmates.

According to him, there was the need for regular medical screening of inmates since most of them were suffering from various ailments due to congestions in the cells.

He said the Clinic together with the Red Cross Society would make arrangements to refer inmates with special cases to regional hospitals. Dr Moshforoush appealed to authorities of the Prison to improve health conditions in the cells.

The Ghana Red Ross Society had earlier organised a similar exercise at the James Town Prison in Accra.
