Accra, Sept. 18, GNA - Mr Wi Keyei-Chul, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Ghana, on Tuesday announced that his country had decided to provide Ghana with two or three million US dollar projects every year to support her economic development and improve the standard of living of the people.
He said Korea would also continue its efforts to share the know-how and experience it had gained through economic and social development with Ghana.
Mr Wi said although Korea's contribution to Ghana's development might not be as big as that of leading donors, these programmes nevertheless showed her strong commitment to building Ghana's essential infrastructure and improving the living standards of Ghanaians through Korea's own development experience.
Mr Wi, who was speaking at a press launch to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, said it was always heart-warming to recognise that the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries had steadily developed in various fields since 1977.
He said one year after the two countries officially agreed on the establishment of diplomatic ties, Korea opened its Embassy in Accra and accredited the first Ambassador.
In the same year, the Ghanaian Ambassador to Tokyo presented his Letter of Credence to the Korean Government, he said, adding that the two countries had a great potential to further expand their trade in a mutually beneficial way.
Dr Charles Y. Brempong-Yeboah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and NEPAD, said relations had grown steadily and had been characterized by total friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation.
There are exchanges of high-level visits, cultural and socio-economic cooperation in a wide range of areas including Information Communication Technology (ICT), health and education. He mentioned the rehabilitation of the Tema Oil Refinery, reconstruction of the Petroleum Storage Depots, an LPG cylinder manufacturing plant and the Buipe-Bolgatanga Petroleum Pipeline project as some of the assistance from the Government of Korea.
He commended the Korean Government for its continuous support and expressed the hope that the bond of friendship and cooperation between the countries would continue to grow in the years ahead. Activities marking the anniversary slated for October 4-12 include painting exhibition, cultural performances, a film festival, street parade, a marathon race, a High School Soccer and Taekwondo Competition. 18 Sept. 07
