Ghanaian Times: Tax offical angers lotto agents at forum

The Times report on its rforntpage that a remark by an official of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at the weekend, caused the disruption of a forum that was to have dismissed the 15 per cent lotto tax and other issues undere the Service Tax Amendment Act. The participants, including lotto operators, receivers, agents and stakers, all walked out of the meeting when Mr C.K. Ayikor, Chief Inspector of Taxes, Services Tax Unit of IRS told them, "Cleaners in my officer pay tax. l do not see the need for you to grumble over the payment of sevice tax." He told them that investigations by his office had shown that the lotto agents frustrated the winners to the extent that were were not paid all the winnings. These statements infuriated the operators and agents who booed and jeered at Mr Ayikor before they walked out of the hall while he was still at his feet.
