Accra, March 7, GNA - The Ghana Armed Forces on Friday held an open day for the general public to expose them to military activities and equipment as part of activities commemorating the 51st independence anniversary. There were exhibitions of military equipment, display of horses, flying in aircraft and armoured vehicles. There was also a photo exhibition on armoured infantry, mobile patrols, foot patrols and casualty evacuation.

Speaking to the media during the tour, Lt. Col. Reginald Odoi, Commanding Officer of the Recce Regiment, said the military, established 48 years ago provided defence, peace and security against external forces. It also provided internal security for certain installations, which include the Castle, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and Burma Camp.

Col. Odoi said the day was to educate the public on the officers and men who man the affairs of the state and the equipment used in order to instil a sense of patriotism in them and recruit them into the military.

Col. Odoi said the military was well-equipped to protect the territorial borders of the country, adding that, the pride of every country was its military. He called on children to remain disciplined and focused in their studies and advised females to join the military. He advised the general public not to fear soldiers but see the military as an institution that protects them and fights for their interest.
