Accra, March 11, GNA- The National Electoral Commission should strictly abide by the rules and regulations to make the results of the 2008 Election acceptable to all.
Mr Daniel Nii Okai, the Chairman of the Odododiodioo constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said this in an interview with the Ghana New Agency (GNA) in Accra on Monday.
He noted that to ensure an acceptable election results there was the need for the compilation of a credible and verifiable electoral roll, which would dependant on an authentic data and personal information on the voter.
"This is very important if rigging is to be avoided to prevent any post-election violence and conflict like the one recently in Kenya," Mr Okai stated.
The NDC Chairman expressed concern about the existence of some 18 registration and polling centres situated within the Accra Central Business District.
He noted that as the name implied, the Central Business District was made up of markets, shops and offices and not a residential area. Mr Okai said that since the setting of registration and polling centres was based on residence and not business, trade or economic activities, the setting of polling stations in the area was unacceptable.
He said the NDC constituency executives had petitioned the EC to remove the registration and polling centres from the area. In the petition signed by the Constituency Chairman of the party, Mr Okai, the NDC indicated that the continuous presence of 18 polling and registration centres in the Central Business District was against guidelines for the setting of polling stations.
Mr Nii Okai recalled that an earlier petition on the same issue was sent to the appropriate authorities on 9th March 2004 and urged the EC to revisit the concerns raised and to remove the 18 registration and polling centres.
It identified the centres to be removed to include the AMA Head Office Registration and polling centre, Independence Avenue JSS, Water and Sewerage Yard No one and two, State Insurance Company number one and two, Fire Service Yard numbers one and two, Ayalolo 6 and 8 Primary school one, two and three, Railway Yard numbers one A and B and Number two registration and polling centres.
