Cape Vars Students Threaten "Aluta"

Some students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have candidly threatened to cause carnage if the committee set up by the Academic Board of the university beguiles any of their colleagues who have appeared before it.

Chronicle gathered that the committee consummated its report on April 17, this year and about 18 students are said to have been implicated in it, for allegedly attempting to force the Students Representative Council (SRC) executive to resign enbloc at the Atlantic Hall a few days before the congregation.

The committee had two sittings on April 6 and 9 with Dr. Haruna as chairman, Dr. Fleitcher, member, Dr. (Mrs.) Opoku-Agyeman, member, and Mr. Alexis Akanson, Assistant Registrar - Students Affairs as the secretary.

Some of the students who appeared before the committee include Raymond Kasei, local National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) secretary, Razak, NUGS secretary, Opoku Asante, SRC president, SRC vice president, co-ordinating secretary for the local NUGS, Atlantic Hall president, SRC co-ordinating secretary, Asare Kofi and Godfred Opoku Agyepong, all of Casely Hayford Hall.

Chronicle in separate interviews with students during the Easter holidays over the 80% grading system instituted in 1996 with persistent annual students agitations gathered that the students were digressing on many issues.

Some of the students confidently intimated that they were acquainted with the 80% grading system before seeking admission and would have sought admission elsewhere if they could not cope with it.

A student remarked that "I am in a society where I should contribute my quota, but where unfamiliar issues crop up, I have to be a partner to resolve them."

Most of the students expressed antipathy about Dr. (Mrs.) Opoku Agyeman, a member of the committee for her uncompromising attitude and insulting students who appeared before the committee.

Chronicle was told the students were forced to watch a video clip on the demonstration to disrupt the last congregation and identify some of the students.

Those students who took part in the demonstration were interrogated over their involvement and spent hours answering questions from the committee.

The SRC and the NUGS leaders who appeared before the committee were asked to disassociate themselves from the NUGS president, Dompreh, who presented the students' petition on the grading system during the last congregation so that he could be dismissed.

The students view the committee's work as only witch-hunting and victimisation. In another development, the Alumni Association of the UCC, in a press release, stated that it views with disgust the disturbances at the 31st Congregation.

It said the action carried out by the students is in contravention of the university's rules on demonstration, rallies, assemblies and processions and called for disciplinary measures against them.
