The controversial former campaign manager of President Kufuor, Alhaji Issaka Inusah, who defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the run-up to the December elections, has announced his return to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a press conference in the capital Accra.

Inusah whom some NDC members blamed for the party's loss of the 2000 elections told a press conference that he made the decision after "a sober reflection on the current political events in the country and on the advice of both his family and well wishers".

He apologized to the NPP saying the reasons for his defection to the NDC are no more relevant. “The reason for my defection to the NDC to wit the lack of internal democracy and transparency in the NPP are no more tenable. Things have changed dramatically for the better and the people of Ghana are the best witnesses that this government is as crystally transparent as any glass can be,” Alhaji Inusah told a well-attended press conference.

Inusah who accused the NPP of various electoral malpractices and lack of democracy denied accusations that he was an opportunist and was staging a come back to the NPP only because it was now in power. “I left on my own volition and I am going back on my own volition. Like one newspaper described me this morning, I am an independent minded person”, Inusah said.

On how members of the NPP felt about his latest decision, Alhaji Inusah said the leadership of the party was cordial and understanding.

Inusah said some members of the NDC persuaded him to reverse his decision moments before he arrived at the press conference but he told them of his determination to go ahead with his plan.

The controversial Alhaji Inusah defected to the NDC after which he accused the NPP of rigging the 1996 elections. Political analysts describe him as a political prostitute adding he must be watched by the NPP.

Most NDC members contacted by this writer declined to comment on the matter. Inusah who campaigned for the NDC in the run-up to the 2000 elections was criticized by some members of the party spelling the doom of the party. Members of the Ghanaian public also criticized Inusah for his inflammatory utterances during the campaign period.

Inusah said he is back to the NPP to continue from where he left off. It is not clear whether the NPP will accept him back as some party faithfuls have cautioned the leadership against accepting.
