The Member of Parliament elect for Jomoro in the Western Region, Ms Samia Nkrumah, might have disappointed the two major parties clamouring for who would have the majority in the next parliament, when she made it clear that she would neither support the New Patriotic Party (NPP) nor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament, and that she would vote on issues and policies that favour Ghanaians.
She has also stated that she would not accept any appointment from a government that is formed by any of the aforementioned parties. “My interest is to serve the Convention People's Party (CPP) and the people of Jomoro who elected me to represent them in parliament,” she said in an interview granted to Kyzz fm in Takoradi over the weekend. According to her serving her party and constituents gladdens her heart more; because if she had lost the election, she would not have gotten the opportunity to be in parliament. “CPP will be visible in parliament, we will vote on merit and on policies," Samia reiterated.
Samia further told her host that it was in their desire to build a CPP without alliance with other parties that made her to champion the idea that the party remains neural in the presidential run-ff, which was supported by the Central Committee (CC) of the party. “This is the best position every serious political party would have adopted,” she noted. To her the time had come for members of the party to direct their energies towards the building of the party to make it a force to reckon with in Ghanaian politics. She was of the view that going into alliance with other parties would not help them to achieve the above objectives.
Samia admitted that both NPP and NDC approached her with juicy offers to join them in the run-off, but she told them that the position of her father's party was supreme. Samia Nkrumah would not, however go into detail as to what the juicy promises made to her by the NDC and NPP were, but preferred to hammer on the cogent position of the CPP, which is to remain neutral. Samia Nkrumah became the Member of Parliament-elect for Jomoro after beating two strong contenders in the just ended December 7 elections. Hon. Lee Ocran of the NDC who is the incumbent MP went into the race with effusive vigour, but was disappointed by his constituents who dumped him for Samia. The other candidate is the District Chief Executive for Jomoro, Hon. Martin Yamekeh Arkah, who contested the election on the ticket of the NPP.
