The Embassy of Ghana in the Russian Federation wishes to re-assure your readers, in general and Ghanaian parents and guardians, whose wards are studying in Russia in particular that none repeat none of the 114 students, enjoying Ghana Government scholarship in Russia, is under any threat of deportation. Incidentally, none of the students bears the name of Kofi Mensah.
It is to be noted that under the existing bilateral agreement between Ghana and Russia, students on Ghana Government scholarship are not required to pay tuition fees in their various institutions/universities. The stipend (supplementary allowance) given to the students by the Government of Ghana is meant to supplement what is given them by the Russian Government.
The Embassy of Ghana sympathizes with the students to the extent that remittances from the Scholarship Secretariat for the payment of their supplementary allowances have delayed this year for well known reasons. Even so, the Embassy has unceasingly been making interventions to the Scholarship Secretariat on behalf of the students while urging them, through their leadership, to exercise patience and restraint in the face of the objective conditions at home.
It is therefore unfortunate that some people are intent on capitalizing on the plight of the students to peddle falsehood and engage in unfounded sensationalism without giving due consideration to the wider implication of such actions on the image of our country as well as her relations with the host country.
