The 2008 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has sent a message of congratulations to His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson on his latest appointment as President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace for the Roman Catholic Church.

Nana Akufo-Addo writes in his letter that “my wife, Rebecca, joins me in extending warm congratulations to you on your latest appointment within the Roman Curia by the Pope, His Holiness Benedict XVI. As you may recall, we were privileged as Christians to be part of the Ghanaian delegation that accompanied you to Rome in October 2003, when that great Christian, the late Pope John Paul II, put the red robes of the Cardinal on your shoulders at St. Peter’s Cathedral. It was a moment of tremendous pride for all of us Ghanaians, you being the first amongst us to be so honoured”.

He continues that, “we are, thus, elated at this recent advancement in your career, for the new responsibility is yet another sign of the confidence that the Catholic Church reposes in you and the spiritual mission that you have undertaken. As the new President of its Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, you will be promoting two of the most important requirements of human dignity, and we are confident that you will bring your large humanity to bear in so doing”.

He concludes that “the Ghanaian people are ennobled by the accomplishments of your life, which reflect credit not only on us, but also on all Africans wherever they may be. We pray to the Almighty for His blessings on you and your mission, and for good health and long life for you”.
