Police intercept ammunition bound for Bunkpurugu

Tamale, March 21, GNA - The Northern Regional Police Command has intercepted a bus with registration number ER3336X, which was travelling from Kumasi to Bunkprurugu, with ammunitions concealed under the driver's seat.

The vehicle, which was seized on Saturday morning at Datoyili, near Tamale, contained: 178 rounds of ammunitions for AK47 rifles, 80 rounds of pistol ammunitions, eight bayonets, and some other ammunition. The driver, Abdala Yaro, 28, and his mate, Yennusom Ibrahim, 20, have been arrested for unlawful possession of military accoutrements without authority and would be arraigned in court, on Monday.


Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Angwubutoge Awuni, Northern Regional Police Commander, who briefed the media on Sunday in Tamale said the Police received information last week that a citizen was trying to send ammunitions to the Bunkprurugu area to support one of the factions involved in the Temaa and Biarug conflicts.

ACP Awuni said the security had been very much alert upon receiving the information leading to the interception of the vehicle saying the Police would strictly deal with anyone found to be fomenting trouble. He also urged drivers and vehicle owners to be very vigilant and not to allow anyone to use their vehicles for criminal activities because they would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
