Government Pays Bonus to Cocoa Farmers

The government has paid a total of about 258.3 million cedis as bonus to cocoa farmers in the Agona District.

Mr Nii A. Tettey, Central Regional Manager of the Produce Buying Company (PBC) announced this at a ceremony to honour 31 farmers from the societies at Agona Nyakrom.

They were each given a wall clock, an overall, two cutlasses and a certificate.

Mr Tettey said the payment was in line with this year's budget statement.

He appealed to cocoa farmers to support the mass spraying exercise and to replant their farms with new hybrid seedlings to increase production.

The Regional Manger advised them to abide by the regulations on cocoa grading to enable the country to maintain its position as the best quality cocoa producer in the world.

Mr Emmanuel Wellington, Acting District Manager of PBC, expressed the hope that incentive packages from the government would encourage them to work harder to maintain their farms.

He said the package would not be a nine day wonder adding that more would be done to boost their morale.

Mr Wellington urged cocoa farmers to collect pass books from their societies that would serve as a guarantee for them to apply for COCOBOD scholarships for their children's education.

Nana Kwesi Manu, the best farmer of the Agona Duakwa Society, thanked the government for honouring its promise and said they would work harder to increase production in the next season.
