More than one hundred and forty workers of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) who have been on special leave for over one year have been declared redundant. According to the Director General of GIMPA, Dr Stephen Addei, this is in line with government’s policy to commercialise public institutions, to enable them to self-finance their activities.
The workers had complained about not being given advance notices pending the lay-off, but Dr Addei said the workers were served with notices about a year ago when they were declared redundant.
He added that the workers who were affected were paid salaries even though they were at home. Dr Addei said the criteria for declaring the workers redundant were based on the efficiency of each worker. The affected workers have petitioned President Kufuor to intervene and save the situation.
