Ashanti NPP replies NDC

The Ashanti Region branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the party believes in democracy and the rule of law and would not intimidate, harass or threaten members of the opposition.

It said the party would not disappoint Ghanaians who voted it into power by doing what was unconstitutional. This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Sam K. Cudjoe, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the party in reaction to a press conference by the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the members would not appear before any probe or committee or public hearing set up by the government.

This follows what the NDC described as harassment of their members who have appeared before committee of inquiry. The statement called on Ghanaians to treat the press conference with contempt it deserves since it was meant to "throw dust into the eyes of the people and cause confusion".

It was also to divert the attention of the government from investigating their dubious activities during the NDC regime.

The statement said it is a well-known fact that it is the mal-administration that plunged the nation into an "economic mess and forced the country to opt for the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative". It said it is alleged that some members of the NDC looted the coffers of the country to enrich themselves adding that these and many revelation of malfeasance has caused the NPP government to investigate some of them.

The Ashanti NPP secretariat said it found it regrettable that the NDC who preached probity and accountability were now afraid to be investigated. "We believe that the NDC is doing this because they have something to hide else they would not have been afraid".

"The secretariat will therefore like to appeal to the NDC to be law-abiding like when the NPP was in the opposition and stop such baseless bluffs", the statement added.
