Accra, June 23, GNA - Ms Hannah Tetteh, Minister of Trade and Industry has noted that the revamped Northern Star Tomato Factory, has the capacity to produce a minimum of 250 metric tonnes per day. She said the project was in line with government objective to promote agro- processing in order to address the problem of post- harvest losses and perennial glut of tomatoes.
Ms Tetteh who was answering questions on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday said the factory would also process other vegetables, fruits and variety of food items to ensure stable prices and incomes for farmers. She said the factory was retooled, rehabilitated and refurbished.
The Minister said the business entity was also provided with working capital to purchase tomatoes from farmers for processing. She said her sector Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture would increase tomatoes production to feed the factory during the next crop season.
