Cape Coast soccer fans celebrate Black Stars' victory

Cape Coast, June 27, GNA - Hundreds of soccer fans in the Cape Coast Metropolis took to the street last night to celebrate the Black Stars' 2-1 victory over the US at the on-going FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa.

Immediately the referee whistled for the end of the match, soccer fans most of them clad in national colours, waved flags amidst the tooting of vehicle horns spontaneously, poured unto the streets as they sang and danced to brass band music.

The fans danced through the principal streets of the metropolis and were joined by others in vehicles decorated in the national colours. In an interview with the GNA, Nana Aidoo, Chief Executive of Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs team, commended the Black Stars for defeating US to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

He noted that the victories chalked by the national team had made Ghanaians proud and asked the Stars to sustain their fighting spirit to enable them to win the cup.

At Elmina, soccer fans danced to "kolomashie", cheered and paid glowing tribute to the Black Stars for their selflessness and dedication that had brought the team that far.

Some of the fans, who gathered at the main Takoradi Highway Shell Filling Station in Cape Coast, danced deep into the night and discussed the splendid performance of the Stars.

Earlier some fans predicted a "cool win" for the Stars, to GNA, citing the 1996 results as a reference.

Mr. James Biney, a newspaper vendor, told GNA that the Black Stars would perform creditably and advance to the next stage of the competition and urged Ghanaians to pray for the team.

On Sunday, a number of Churches dedicated part of their services to pray for the success of the Stars.

At the Victory Bible Church International, Reverend Francis Aubyn, the Associate Pastor, led the congregation to pray for the nation's progress and success and wisdom and insight for the President and his team. They also asked God's intervention for the Stars' in the next stage of the competition. 27 June 10
