President John Agyekum Kufuor said on Sunday that government will endeavour to restore positive relations between the state and the church.
He said the state alone could not ensure prosperity and national
development without the church, which brought education into the country.
President Kufuor who was addressing an inter-denominational church service in Takoradi as part of his four-day official tour of the Western Region said: "We need to restore morality into the body politics.
"You as church leaders should put conscience into the life of the people through preaching."
President Kufuor said good governance is what will bring peace and stability to society and appealed to church leaders not to pray for God's guidance only for Ghanaians but also for the whole world to forestall events like the terrorist acts in the US on September 11th in which a number of Ghanaians also perished.
Mr Kufuor also urged the church to use the pulpit to educate their members on the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
In a sermon, Rev. Paul Henry Dsane, Regional Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, asked Ghanaians to give thanks to God for choosing Mr Kufuor, a man of tolerance, as President.
He said tolerance does not mean weakness, adding that Ghanaians are confident that President Kufuor would save the nation from its present predicament.
Bishop Emmanuel Botwey, General Overseer of Christian Faith Church noted that the development of every society or nation depends more on its human resource than on financial or economic factor.
He said the church service was organized to seek God's face for Ghana and hoped the worship and prayers "will be sweet fragrance before God to hear the humble cry of Ghanaians and heal the nation".
