It is projected that by the year 2014, over 1.2 million people would have been infected with the HIV virus if efforts are not doubled to check the infection rate in the country, a Ghanaian doctor warned.

Dr Phyllis Antwi, a lecturer at the School of Public Health of the University of Ghana, said though the current prevalence rate is three per cent, things should not be taken for granted.

She told a press briefing in Accra on this year's World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1 that there is the real danger that the rate could increase in future as it had in the neighbouring countries.

The one-day seminar was to sensitise the media on the World AIDS Day activities. The Ghana AIDS Commission has lined up activities to mark the day and November has been set aside as AIDS awareness month, to create and deepen awareness on HIV/AIDS.
