The Board of Directors of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) is investigating allegations of bribery and corruption leveled against staff of the Institute. Some staff of the institute are accused of demanding bribes from prospective students to offer them admission, while some have also willingly received financial favours, which might have influenced admissions.
Some parents whose wards were not admitted for the 2000/2001 academic year are attributing it to their inability to bribe their way through. JOYFM’s investigations into the reports also revealed that some staff have on several occasions illegally asked unqualified students to attend lectures although they have not been admitted.
Sources close to the Institute say, the board, which met shortly after JOYFM’s expose on the issue is treating the allegations with utmost seriousness. The board will make its findings and subsequent decisions public.
The board’s investigations are also expected to cover damaging allegations of sexual impropriety made by some female students against some staff. Some parents are reported to have openly confronted some staff of the Institute for daring to make sexual overtures at their daughters who were seeking admission.
