The Bimbilla Health Centre is to be upgraded into a district hospital as part of efforts to improve the health care delivery to the 148,000 people in the Nanumba District.

President John Agyekum Kufuor, who announced this, said concessionary works for the upgrading had already been awarded on contract.

Two Cuban nurses are currently manning the Centre, which was built in 1947. Serious cases are referred to the Yendi or Salaga hospitals and two other health centres in the district are at Wulensi and Pincheratanga.

President Kufuor who on a three day tour of the Northern Region told the chiefs and people of the Nanumba Traditional Area at Bimbilla on Wednesday that although the NPP lost the Bimbilla seat there was a lot of goodwill in the district for the government and it would continue to provide the needed assistance to the area known for the production of yams.

"We do not have anything against the people of Bimbilla and it's surroundings or environs, you are part of Ghana and you expressed your right as citizens" he added.

He, however, cautioned the people to ignore the propaganda that the government was going to drive away Kokombas. President Kufuor urged them to make the enskinment of a new Paramount Chief in the area peaceful.
