Minister of Defence-Designate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah
The Minister of Defence-Designate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has outlined comprehensive strategies to alleviate the strain on the 37 Military Hospital and improve healthcare services for military personnel and their families.
During his presentation to Parliament's Appointments Committee on January 28, 2025, he addressed the persistent issues of overcrowding and resource limitations at the hospital.
Dr. Omane Boamah proposed the establishment of a specialised healthcare facility dedicated exclusively to military personnel and their dependents.
He highlighted that the current competition for services at the 37 Military Hospital from civilians significantly impacts the quality of care available to military members.
His vision includes ensuring that military families have uninterrupted access to superior healthcare services by allocating dedicated resources for their needs.
To achieve this, the minister-designate suggested modernising the equipment at the 37 Military Hospital with the latest medical technology.
Additionally, he advocated for implementing innovative procurement methods for medical supplies to reduce costs and secure a reliable supply of essential drugs and materials, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided.
Dr. Omane Boamah also emphasised the strategic importance of decentralizing military healthcare.
His plan includes operationalising the Afari Military Hospital and constructing a new health facility in Accra.
These measures, he explained, would not only reduce the burden on the 37 Military Hospital but also improve healthcare access for military personnel across different regions.
“Plans are underway to build a new facility in Accra exclusively for soldiers and their families, as civilians currently compete with them for services at the 37 Military Hospital,” he remarked.
“Once this new facility is completed, along with the operationalization of the Afari Military Hospital, the pressure on the 37 Military Hospital will be significantly reduced. Moreover, through innovative procurement strategies, we can ensure a cost-effective and consistent supply of medication, meeting the critical healthcare needs of our military community,” he added.
