The Dutch who came to the Gold Coast in the late 1590s, had a map drawn up in the 1620s. Now, they mentioned Denkyira, Sefwi,Mampong, Tafo..'.a suburb of Kumasi today" in it, but there was nothing called Asante back then. The name came about after the battle of Feyiase. For you to understand, there was nothing called America Brazil, or Argemtina until the white men went to those lands. Just as the name Gold Coast did not exist until the Portuguese came to our shores and named it so in their language which was translated into the English language as the Gold Coast.I hope that make sense to you. The name changed to Kumasi, after the traditional ritual with the 'Kuma' trees performed by the Legendry Okomfo Anokye.
