I think we should maintain the 60 years compulsory retirement for the moment. After 60 years you are still strong to create your own business. We have too many of our children sitting at home looking for jobs while people have reduced their ages to stay on the job. We are not truthful at all. When you have your own business like Opanyin Banfo of Sikkins, Buffet of US, you can work and work till your limps start failing. In the US for example, there several private companies who employ people who have retired after 65 years. Thank you.

There's nothing wrong with setting the retirement age at 65, 67 or even 70. The problem we face in Ghana is with retirement benefits.
First, the retirement age must not be mandatory. Secondly our civil and public service pay scale should be reviewed. Next the management and support staff at SSNIT should not be permitted by law to make more than civil servants and administrators certainly should not enjoy the obscene salaries and perks they now enjoy unless and until a review of return on investments(ROI) that management took over previous years. Overall investment returns of less than 20 % yield will not attract a raise.
Parliament and SSNIT should allow labour organization union members to have the option of investing some percentage of their contributions into private investment portfolio. For example, the government and administrators at tertiary institutions should not be using government funds to build residential housing anymore. Why not have staff who are willing to invest a percentage of their SSNIT contributions in construction projects which are likely to provide higher returns? There are a number of investment opportunities for workers in Ghana that will offer better returns on SSNIT contributions than what is offered by SSNIT currently. As more jobs are created because of diversified SSNIT investments, the need for mandatory retirement age will be a thing of the past.

From all the arguments heard so far, the main reason why some people like Austin gamey are not in favour of extending retirement age is that it will block the chance of young people from getting into employment. However, this is not true because increasing employment rate is achieved by a strategic efforts through good policies to create more decent jobs. Studies have shown that many retirees in the public service were not replaced, hence public service population keeps reducing since the past 10 years. This is an ample proof that there is no significant relationship between increasing employment rate and retirement age. Notwithstanding, the positive side of late retirement includes utilizing vast experience and expertise of workers after 60 (people reach their peak in terms of skills and experience from 60); less pressure on the pension fund: improves poor pensions, due to poor salaries many Ghanaians go home with very poor pensions, so by extending their retirement, their pension rights (1 out of 2 factors for calculating pension) will increase, thereby improving their pensions etc. Finally, let's not forget the politicians in this debate, because they are all public servants. They should also be pensionable.

On the issue of increasing retirement age is long overdue. Let's all as a nation understand that increasing the retirement age from 60 to 65 has no effect on unemployment . More jobs can be created by either the government or individual to address the unemployment issue. People retire at 60 and still seek employment somewhere and receive salary while ssnit continue to pay them till they die. In order to make ssnit funds stable for the benefit of the pensioners and the nation ,government must Increase the age to stabilise fund and invest the funds in infrastructure to help in developing the economy for the betterment of the people of Ghana rather than paying huge sums of money to pensioners every month while some of them are still working even though they are on retirement but because they are still strong and experienced some organisations hire them instead to work for their companies and institutions that spent a lot of money to train them. Some of them were sent to abroad to acquire the needed skills and knowledge to serve Ghana, but just a few years of service he would be made to go on retirement and be receiving big pension every month and at the same time working for individuals firm and take additional pay. Food for thought.

Moreover, how our population is growing without establishing new businesses, it will be a detrimental to the youths if the old aged still remain in office beyond this weak ages.

This current retirement age of 60 was established in 1992 by the pension law. In 1992, the life expectancy of Ghana was 56.23 years. In 2025, Ghana life expectancy is 65.41 years, over 16% increase. Hence, applying the current life expectancy, the 60 years retirement age should be increased by 16%, which is approximately 69 years. So the retirement age should rather be increased to 69 years instead of the proposed 65 years, for national development. Proper measures should be put in place to create more jobs for the youth. Early pension is not the solution for unemployment. The retirement age in UK and other European countries is 67 years, yet their employment rate is far better than Ghana whose retirement age 60. Therefore using early retirement age as a solution for youth employment is baseless and lazy way of thinking.

A lot of people want early retirement. By the time one is 50yrs, one is tired already but the laws make you loose if you choose to go at 55. Instead of upwards, think downwards and see the impact.
I said it that people will start comparing Ghana to the western world where there's deficit of labour force. In Ghana over flowing surplus is the case! We should think small!

Work life is stressful in current times with parents not even getting time for family bonding. We all complain of social vices. Physiologically, btwn 50 and l 60yrs the pension system must have a good reward for voluntary retirement after 50yrs. People need to have social life with children, grandchildren and entire family. If they water them out after 60 and they die early, it is to our disadvantage. We need the elderly to be with us for long. This subject they're handling like this is a big issue
