A former government spokesperson on governance and security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has lauded former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as Ghana’s most capable economist and the right man to lead the nation on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on New Day on TV3 on July 7, 2025, Boakye-Danquah described Dr Bawumia as “the best economist that Ghana would have, that Ghana has had, and the future of Ghana.”

He also commended both the media and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he described as their admiration for Dr Bawumia, adding that it reflects the NPP flagbearer’s credibility.

“I see that the media houses and even the NDC have a lot of admiration for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party. And I'm glad,” he said.

Boakye-Danquah argued that President John Dramani Mahama falls short when it comes to economic leadership.

“If we need to put proper economic knowledge and a sound economic value system in place, H.E. John Dramani Mahama comes nowhere close. That's the truth. He comes nowhere close. So I'm glad that you would want to replay some of the statements that Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made. It’s a clear indication for us as a political party that Dr Bawumia is the right person to lead this country and turn around its economic fortunes,” he stated.

He further highlighted Bawumia’s contributions to major government programs, including Free SHS, One District One Factory, the Gold-for-Oil policy, and the introduction of medical drones and ambulance services. According to him, these initiatives demonstrate Dr Bawumia’s commitment and capability.

“No amount of words from the NDC, no amount of tagging him with statements he’s made in the past, is going to change what the Ghanaian people think of such a noble gentleman, a man of repute who has stood the test of time from 2008 to date, a man who has assisted President Nana Akufo-Addo in implementing his vision.”

He continued, “The Free SHS idea, which came from President Nana Akufo-Addo and was implemented within the first 100 days with approval from the EMT, has that idea failed? You talk about One District, One Factory, the ambulances, the drones, the Gold-for-Oil initiative, NHIS, and the 16 flagship government programs, all of which required funding and have been supported immensely and consistently.”

Boakye-Danquah also claimed that portions of Ghana’s COVID-19 funds were used to settle Mahama-era debts amounting to about $21 billion.

“And he [Bawumia] has the right brain, the right mindset, the right position, the right character. And when we talk about character and integrity, who else but Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia? According to the Auditor General’s report on COVID-19 funding, a significant portion of that money was used to service John Dramani Mahama’s loans, close to about $21 billion.”

“So really, we need to position this very clearly. Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Wednesday, is going to outline the policy directives of the campaign and present the future that Ghana truly deserves,” he added.
