Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has criticised the government’s handling of the recent assault on health workers at Ridge Hospital, describing the incident as a reflection of systemic failures in Ghana’s healthcare security framework.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Dr Kissi said the breach of hospital safety was so serious that in other countries it would have warranted the resignation of the Health Minister, regardless of political affiliation.
“In other jurisdictions, trust me, the minister would have resigned. Australia, other jurisdictions because of this incident. It’s not about Health Minister Akandoh. It is about the fact that this is a system failure,” he said.
His comments follow the violent altercation on August 17, when relatives of a patient attacked nurses and medical staff at the hospital’s emergency unit.

The incident sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger security in health facilities.
Dr Kissi, who is also a medical doctor, described the lack of security in emergency wards as unacceptable.
“Hospitals should have good security to begin with especially emergency areas he noted. There was a flaw in security system at Ridge”, he indicated.
He also faulted the Health Ministry for its response, saying the minister’s visit to the hospital was poorly prepared because staff directly affected by the assault were not properly briefed or involved.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has since set up a committee to investigate the incident, giving it a one-week deadline to present its findings and recommendations.
Meanwhile, one of the assaulted nurses, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against social media personality and activist Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as ‘Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian’.
She is accusing him of physical assault and defamation.
